2026년 2월 4일, 서울의 흐린 하늘 아래 서울의료원에서 “응급실관리의학: 혼돈에서 오케스트레이션으로, 응급의학의 미래를 항해하다”를 주제로 한 강연이 진행되었습니다.

이번 강연은 공공의료 최전선에서 헌신하고 있는 의료진을 대상으로, 단순한 임상 역량을 넘어 시스템 차원의 관리 역량이 왜 필수적인지를 조망하는 자리였습니다.

“의학이 과학이라면, 관리는 예술입니다.”

신희준 센터장은 현재 대한민국 응급의료체계가 과밀화, 인력 소진, 자원 고갈이 동시에 발생하는 구조적 위기, 이른바 ‘퍼펙트 스톰’ 상황에 직면해 있다고 진단하였습니다. 개별 환자를 살리는 것은 의료기술이지만, 동시에 수백 명의 생명을 지켜내는 것은 체계의 설계와 운영이라는 점을 강조하였습니다.

강연에서는 다음과 같은 핵심 전략이 제시되었습니다.

첫째, 핵심성과지표와 데이터 분석을 기반으로 응급실의 현황을 객관적으로 진단하는 체계 구축입니다.
둘째, 환자 흐름 최적화를 통한 병목 해소 및 체류시간 단축입니다.
셋째, 데이터 기반 의사결정과 의사-간호사 Dyad Leadership 모델을 통한 조직 리더십 강화입니다.
넷째, 인공지능과 디지털 트윈 기술을 활용한 자원 한계 극복 방안입니다.

신희준 센터장은 응급실 뺑뺑이와 의료진 번아웃이 일상화된 현실에서 단순히 혼돈을 견디는 방식은 더 이상 지속 가능하지 않다고 지적하였습니다. 응급실관리의학은 시스템 자체를 진단하고 치료하는 학문적 접근이며, 생존을 넘어 ‘오케스트레이션’으로 전환하기 위한 전략적 도구임을 제시하였습니다.

또한 ‘Data–Delta–Decision’ 프레임워크를 통해 리더십의 실행력을 강화하는 방법, 과밀 문제를 흐름 관리 관점에서 재정의하는 전략, 그리고 인공지능을 의료진을 대체하는 기술이 아닌 지원하는 도구로 활용하는 방향성에 대해 논의하였습니다.

이번 강연은 단순한 학술 발표를 넘어, 지속 가능한 응급의료체계를 구축하기 위한 실천적 메시지를 담은 자리였습니다.

On February 4, 2026, under a cloudy winter sky in Seoul, a lecture titled “Emergency Department Management Medicine: From Chaos to Orchestration, Navigating the Future of Emergency Medicine” was delivered at Seoul Medical Center.

The session was designed for frontline public healthcare professionals and focused on why system-level management capability is now as essential as clinical expertise in contemporary emergency medicine.

“Medicine is a science, but management is an art.”

Director Heejun Shin emphasized that the Korean emergency medical system is currently facing a structural crisis characterized by overcrowding, workforce exhaustion, and resource depletion. While medical skills save individual patients, it is the system that saves hundreds simultaneously. He underscored that the future of emergency medicine depends not only on clinical excellence but on deliberate system design and operational governance.

The lecture addressed four core strategic pillars.

First, building an objective diagnostic framework for the emergency department through key performance indicators and rigorous data analytics.
Second, optimizing patient flow to eliminate bottlenecks and reduce boarding and prolonged length of stay.
Third, strengthening organizational leadership through data-driven decision-making and a Dyad Leadership model based on physician-nurse partnership.
Fourth, leveraging artificial intelligence and digital twin technologies to overcome structural resource constraints.

Director Shin stated that in an era defined by ambulance diversion loops and staff burnout, merely enduring chaos is no longer sustainable. Emergency Department Management Medicine was presented as a discipline that diagnoses and treats the system itself, shifting from survival mode toward structured orchestration.

He also discussed the Data–Delta–Decision framework as a leadership execution model, the reframing of overcrowding as a flow management problem, and the strategic deployment of AI as a support tool to augment rather than replace exhausted healthcare professionals.

The lecture was more than an academic presentation; it served as a call to action for sustainable structural reform.

The event was hosted at the invitation of Dr. Lim Dae-sung, Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Seoul Medical Center and Regional Responsibility Policy Leader for the Seoul Metropolitan Government, whose leadership in public emergency care was acknowledged with deep appreciation.
